The transition of post-revolution society has inevitably influenced the demand for a diversity of forms and concepts in housing, from family homes and villas to residential and multifunctional buildings of varying spatial qualities and sizes. There has been an opportunity to catch up with global trends, and it can be said that this progress is gradually being achieved. The quality of architectural education plays a crucial role on this challenging path.

The course Fundamentals of Architectural Design is the first subject that introduces students to architecture as a creative process. It helps students understand the essence of architecture, its function, and purpose, and encourages them to perceive it as a synthesis of disciplines. It teaches students to grasp the phenomenology of place and space and introduces them to the fundamental principles of composition and structural design. This introduction becomes a significant impulse for discovering the students’ creative abilities, which are essential for subsequent studio work, providing an initial but critical opportunity to nurture this creativity. Along with the course Residential Buildings, where students explore all aspects of housing and learn the basics of typology, this serves as preparation for designing residential buildings in studio classes.

Studio work in Residential Buildings covers almost all forms of housing, with the complexity corresponding to the year of study, ranging from family homes to urban residential structures. The assignments always reflect the relevance of the topic within the context of the fast-changing contemporary lifestyle. A key aspect of studio work is the technical construction part, where students gradually learn to refine their designs to the level of detailed construction solutions, including building details. The knowledge gained is tested in the final bachelor’s thesis, which involves developing an architectural concept into a detailed construction and technical documentation.

The success of our students in studio project competitions (CAW, SVOČ, South Moravian Building of the Year Award) is significantly influenced by the professional and pedagogical level of the studio leaders, both internal and practicing architects.
