Design Studio

Studio projects are a core component of architectural education, starting from the first semester in the subject “Fundamentals of Architectural Design” and later in “Architectural Studio Workshops.” They are based on the “learning by doing” method, which involves acquiring knowledge and skills through practical application. This process involves a dialogue between the instructor (architect) and the student over the developing project. The thematic focus includes residential buildings, public buildings, industrial buildings, heritage preservation, and interior design. During their studies, students will go through all the studio workshops.

For studio work, prior knowledge from subjects studied from the first semester is essential, with students further deepening their knowledge in subsequent semesters. Among the most important subjects is “Building Construction,” where students learn about the building as part of the general space—a cohesive whole of functions, structures, technical equipment, and foundation soil. Another crucial subject for architects is “Typology,” taught separately for residential buildings, public buildings, industrial, and agricultural buildings. This basic typology is followed by specialized and non-typological subjects such as “Heritage Preservation” and “Interior Design and Exhibition.” Other subjects beneficial for mastering studio work include “Structural Systems,” “Building Services Engineering (BSE),” and “Building Physics.” These provide fundamental knowledge about construction systems, principles of designing sewage systems, water supply, and air conditioning, as well as basic knowledge of acoustics and thermal technology.

It is clear from the above that a student tasked with designing a building must apply all acquired knowledge and navigate the balance between their idealistic vision and practical feasibility. The breadth of knowledge required in two semesters is comparable to the curriculum of Civil Engineering with a specialization in Building Construction. This is the essential minimum needed for creating architecture.

Students sign up for individual studios through the VUT Studis portal before each semester begins. In the first semester of the Bachelor’s program, students complete the “Fundamentals of Architectural Design” subject, where they independently work on three separate tasks. The content and teaching methods may vary slightly depending on the leading instructor. In subsequent semesters, students must continuously complete all typological and specialized studio workshops in any order according to the relevant semester.
