Design Studio of Detail in Architecture
Detail is increasingly becoming an important part of architecture. In a detail, you can not only recognize a good architect but also understand their way of thinking. Therefore, students in this course first delve into the study of atypical details from renowned architects. The insights gained are then applied to their own designs, making them more realistic. The methodology, in addition to practical exercises, is complemented by a series of lectures where architectural details are supported by an understanding of material fundamentals: how to use, process, and choose the most suitable manufacturing technology for these materials.
The architectural detail ultimately becomes part of the bachelor’s thesis, where students validate their detailed drawings through the production of a physical model. Based on the drawings, they select appropriate craftsmen, production processes, technologies, and materials. They are involved in the manufacturing process and adjust their design in actual scale with real materials. This is practical preparation, as the architect’s role lies somewhere between the client and the craftsman. The architect materializes the client’s vision but must adjust this vision while working with craftsmen to ensure that the final detail harmonizes aesthetically with the initial concept.
In conclusion, if “God is in the detail,” why not preach “religious enlightenment.”
